HUD Extends Foreclosure Relief to CA Homeowners

The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced a 90-day extension of its foreclosure moratorium on FHA-insured mortgages, including HECMs, for areas of Los Angeles County devastated by recent wildfires.

Go deeper: The moratorium announced in Mortgagee Letter 2025-07 prohibits servicers from initiating or completing foreclosure actions through July 7, 2025. The moratorium was originally set to expire on April 8, 2025.

Why it matters: HUD noted in a press release that there are over 100,000 FHA-insured mortgages on properties located in the Presidentially-Declared Major Disaster Area.

  • HUD is working with servicers and others to assess how many of these properties have been severely damaged or destroyed.
